The band at present has been  formed over the last six years, beginning with a meeting to try to involve local people, also to choose a name for the new band and a practise venue, this was in October 2001 . Several different ideas for a band name were put forward , Pentland Caledonia Pipes & Drums was a popular winner as the band would be based in Balerno at the foot of the Pentland Hills. As things progressed a small but enthusiastic group started putting together a new band. The band needed a brand new repertoire so everyone contributed with their ideas for tunes and the learning process began .  A brand new uniform was also needed and thanks to two separate lottery grants everyone was kitted out in the new uniform , with the kilts being made in the Scottish National Tartan. Instruments were also needed and brand new McCallum chanters for the pipers and a new set of Andante drums for the drummers were purchased, which meant the band could now go out and play at engagements. As with all bands, people come and go , but most of the people who have joined us have stayed with us , and we now have a playing band of nearly twenty people plus learners on both pipes and drums to join in sometime in the near future. The band meets for practise in Balerno.
